Hash Brown Casserole

Ingredients for this Easy Hash Brown casserole Dish

1. 2 tablespoons butter.

2. 1 small onion, chopped fine.

3. 2 1/2 cups frozen shredded hash browns.

4. 1/2 pound sausage, pork or beef,cut into bite size pieces.

5. 2 cups whole milk.

6. 5 eggs.

7. 1/2 tsp salt.

8. 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper.

9. 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg.

10. 1 Large tbsp grain mustard.

11. 6 cups dried or stale bread cut into ½ inch cubes.

12. 2 cups shredded Cheddar.

13. 1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan.

Directions for Hash Brown Casserole recipe

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

With vegetable oil or cooking spray and cover the oven casserole dish.

1 Heat a large frying pan add the butter to melt then the chopped onions and gently cook over medium-low heat until soft, about 4 minutes.

2 Add the hash browns and break apart into smaller pieces, again gently heat through until soft, about 4 -6 minutes set aside onto a warm oven tray.

3 Add the cut sausage, into the frying pan cook until they start to cook and crisp the remove from pan and set aside.

4 In a large bowl, mix the milk, eggs, salt, pepper, nutmeg and mustard, briskly whisk together with a fork to combine.

5 Into the oven dish add the hash browns evenly along the base of the oiled oven dish then spread over the cooked onions.

6 Spread the cubes evenly over the onions and hash browns and then add the evenly the sausages.

7 Pour the egg and milk mix over all the contents, then carefully and evenly sprinkle over the Parmesan cheese.

8 The last layer is to the cheddar carefully the cheese over all, saving ¾ spoonful of cheddar for the final section before placing the oven casserole dish into the oven for about 40-45 minutes.

9 The final part of this recipe is to take out of the oven the uncovered dish and sprinkle the last of the cheddar cheese over the cooked content.

The choice is that you can then return the casserole with the added cheese to the oven for about 8-10 minutes to allow the added cheese to cook brown and crispy or you can place the dish under the grill some prefer the grill.

This method is preferred by many as you can see it browning and you have a little more control over the overall appearance of your cooking efforts, it is entirely a personal choice.

Served with some fresh steamed or boiled broccoli, green beans or carrots and you will have a superior substantial enjoyable meal.
